SEEMED NO OTHER MORSE TUTORIAL COULD BE FOUND AFFORDING A STEADY
CURRICULUM AND/OR FACILITY FOR LEARNING TO SEND AND RECEIVE
MORSE AT A POSITIVE RATE STAGE FOR STAGE.

LUCID PUBLICATIONS HOLD THE COPYRIGHT TO THIS PROGRAM,COMPLETE OR
IN PART. BUT, you may PASS ON as many copies as you wish.
Providing the program is in it's entirety, and is given free.
If satisfaction incurs, please mention it or upload it onto any Comms
Bbs you might be a member of. A little mental arithmetic will assure
you that, considering the time involved, and the supplying thereof all
the extras when registering, no profit is made. It is all in the
interest of Amateur Radio, a member of which you maybe or will be

A VERY SPECIAL NOTE
-----------------------
*****
The NOVICE LICENCE is here.
On April 19th 90 the D.T.I. made an announcement.
There will be two new UK. licence classes.
Amateur Radio (novice) licence 'A' and 'B'.
The class 'A' (novice) will require a morse test of ONLY 5 W.P.M.
So now all you G's without an 'A' licence and CB'ers, in fact
all enthusiasts take note.
The Novice 'A' licence will allow you on to part of THE SHORT WAVE BANDS
IE. Give you the WORLD as well as THE NEXT STREET!
This is an easy first step to the coveted FULL AMATEUR 'A' LICENCE.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Special note)
LUCID PUBLICATIONS would like to credit and thank 'RICHARD GALE'
His code was used in one of the graphics for the appearing facility.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If one was asked to strike a match on a piece of wet soap, or shall
we say nail a soft fried egg to the ceiling, it would be quite
reasonable concluding this to be an impossibility.
However, formidable as it may seem, the mastering of morse, is a
task lying well within the bounds of probability for anyone who can
muster enough determination to see a job through to the end. It calls
simply for tenacity.
The desire to reach this goal is already there or you would not be
reading this. Furthermore, this tutorial constitutes a vehicle which
can get you there if you are prepared to devote some of your time to
using it. We are sure you will.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
READ THIS PARAGRAPH AT LEAST TWICE BEFORE MOVING ON, GRASP AND
THOROUGHLY ABSORB IT'S CONTENT.
In order to master morse in half the time do not take what appears
to be a short cut and begin simply copying randomized characters.
Reason, because one has nothing to relate what is heard, to.
Mastering the 'di dah dit' voice rhythm must first be achieved.
MORSE IS RHYTHMIC SOUND AND NEEDS MUST IT SHOULD BE LEARNED AS SUCH.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As essentially, the object of the program is to ETCH SOUND RHYTHMS
into ones memory, and because most students will be aspiring
towards THE FULL "A" LICENCE MORSE TEST, it was decided to maintain
throughout the program, 'A CHARACTER RATE' equivalent to 'TWELVE
WORDS PER MINUTE', and vary the DELAY (thinking time) between
complete characters and words.
Thus, the AVERAGE or MEAN rhythms neccessary for the reading of
morse, will be heard more often and etched deeper.
The student is thereby relieved the need to concentrate on an
aspect related to sending, which would in any case be learned from
experience when the coveted "A" licence is to hand.
ie. meticulously measuring gaps.
As the signals heard from any source whatever must inevitably vary
about the mean which builds up in ones memory,
the difference could be so slight, it will not be noticed.
On the other hand, if one foolishly practiced measuring gaps
against the computer clock expecting a screen result, only a
machine could produce characters sent with the correct gaps,
the clock is precise. Even if a professional did this he would
be very dismayed 'AS HE WOULD HAVE WHAT IS KNOWN AS A FIST', ie,
a very slight variation regarding gaps in his sending which
would be perfectly readable, in fact his fist would be in time
recognisable. Rely on the mean rhythm which will build up in
your memory and control your hand.
A couple of files deviate purposely from this stratagem, the file
'VICTOR' for instance whereby the character element rate, as well
as the character and word rate can be slowed down by YOUR CHOICE
It will also be noticed that apart from the one reference screen
MORSE is never depicted graphically as DOTS and DASHES. If it were,
then one would be inclined to voice it as such.
Instead, the DI DAH DIT voice rhythm is used throughout, this, one
must think in terms of, until the sound rhythm proper takes over.
ALTHOUGH A SPECIAL CABLE IS SUPPLIED FOR CONNECTING A MORSE KEY
TO THE JOYSTICK PORT, IF AN ORTHODOX STRAIGHT KEY IS NOT TO HAND
THE RIGHT BUTTON OF THE MOUSE CAN BE USED WITH MORSEKEY PRG.
WHETHER OR NOT THE SPECIAL CABLE IS IN SITU.
'THE MOUSE MUST OF COURSE BE CONNECTED TO THE NORMAL MOUSE PORT.'
HOWEVER, THIS IS ONLY A MEANS TO AN END, USING ONE FINGER IS
HARDLY GOOD SENDING PRACTISE, A PROPER STRAIGHT KEY MUST BE USED
WHEN UNDERTAKING SERIOUS USE OF THE ULTIMATE MORSE TUTORIAL.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
SUGGESTED CURRICULUM FOR ANYONE STARTING FROM 'SCRATCH'
----------------------------------------------------------
One can of course use this program as desired, the following is
just one way of using it to advantage.
So we move on to 'ALPHA' and really begin committing morse
symbols to memory by using the 'CAPITALS' phase.
You may at first think its use is childish, well really it is,
but then it was childish when you sat repeating seven sevens are
forty nine, seven sevens are forty nine. It is the only reason
you know that seven sevens are forty nine!
By using 'CAPITALS' screen, no need to look up the symbols first,
what you see you know is correct.
IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO COMMIT MORSE TO MEMORY.
-------------------------------------------------
BRAVO
Using this you can test yourself with the first group, reverting
back to 'CAPITALS' for characters sluggish to define.
Always be sure to voice the di dah dit rhythm plus termination.
Learn, practice, and test yourself with each group, mastering
each group before passing on to the next.
CHARLIE
Moving on to the sound phase of each group, it is possible to
test yourself by hearing the sound of the symbols you have
hopefully learned, ie HEAR the RHYTHM, STATE the CHAR. and CHECK.
You will find yourself inwardly voicing this rhythm, but the
sound will also be registering itself.
DELTA
Use this file for the same learning, practice, and testing
process, but for numbers.
HOTEL
Just as Alpha capitals were used for sluggish symbol revising,
So can 'HOTEL' be used for defining a sound rhythm sluggishly.
TANGO and UNIFORM
Use these files to test yourself reading random letters
and numbers. The characters are very much larger, and the delay
can be regulated at four different settings. Unlike INDIA, you
have the character appear for check with these files.
VICTOR
At this stage it would be prudent to spend a little time with
this file 'VICTOR'
You can use it at intervals as with 'INDIA', and 'JULIET'
This is a difficult phase to master due to the mixture of
numbers and letters, however, keep on the ball, you will win in
the end
One may be inclined to say "I need this file like a rattle snake
needs mountain boots, I'll stick to letters"
You may not need it for your test, but eventually you will need
it.
INDIA and MIKE
We should now be ready to move on to copying random sent characters
at different speeds WITHOUT need to check.
REASON for no check is that mistakes are not the enemy! 'HESITATION'
is, ie. failure to define a character quick enough whereby the
following character/s is/are lost.
If any hesitation is too long and another character is heard, one
must learn to instantly concentrate on this following character
and of course the ensuing train.
One must learn to do this, as later when in actual QSO, it is
not unusual for a character to be lost under some adjacent QRN.
TAKE note of the sticking, awkward ones, go back to 'HOTEL' and
ETCH THEM DEEPER.
-------------------
JULIET
When one can copy letters and numbers reasonably well, it is time
for copying words.
Practice with this file often to get out of the habit of trying
to read the word already copied, thus missing the next train of
characters sent.
Plod on regardless word after word, and read them later.
ROMEO
Finally we can go on to tackling long plain language messages.
A short, slow, easy to remember message is about as much use to
you, as would be a chocolate oven door to a Cordon Bleu Chef.
So, ROMEO offers four long difficult messages, sent faster
in order to make one work at copying.
Try each one periodically, you will get a little further each
time, and they will be of lasting use.
MORE FILES CONSTITUTE THE PROGRAM, THEY SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.
Use these at your leisure.
-----------------------------------------------
Wishing you every success, and enjoyable use of this program.

UNFORTUNATELY IT WOULD SEEM THAT THE SAME SPIRIT TOWARDS OUR
FRATERNITY DOES NOT TODAY PREVAIL.
THIS PROGRAM WHICH CONSTITUTED ALMOST TWO YEARS TO PRODUCE AND
IN THE SPIRIT OF AMATEUR RADIO WAS RELEASED INTO THE SHAREWARE
PUBLIC DOMAIN LIBRARIES, HAS BEEN RECEIVED WITH LESS THAN THE
ENTHUSIASM ONE WOULD ANTICIPATE.
ALTHOUGH IT HAS BEEN REVIEWED BY THE POWERS THAT BE WHO ARE
QUALIFIED TO ASSESS ITS MERITS, AND WAS REFERRED TO AS THE BEST
AVAILABLE, AND ALTHOUGH FROM FEEDBACK IT IS LEARNED THAT MANY
COPIES HAVE BEEN SENT OUT, NO ONE IT APPEARS WISHES TO REGISTER.
BECAUSE OF THIS, BEFORE AS A LAST RESORT WITHDRAWING IT,
AN EXECUTABLE MORSEKEY TESTING FILE CAN ONLY BE FOUND ON THE
SECOND DISK. A DISK FULL OF PROGRAMS THEMSELVES WELL WORTH THE
REASONABLE REGISTRATION FEE. BEST 73,s G4BXU.
